What Does Safety Really Mean?

For people experiencing domestic violence, safety is complicated and it’s not one size fits all. Having a strong safety net is crucial. Yet – before we can help to create this in our communities – we need to truly understand the big picture. When we narrow our understanding of safety, we narrow how we can help people in this situation.

As a community working to end domestic violence, we all have multiple roles to play in creating this safety. One of the first steps is to have conversations that help us broaden our definition of exactly what safety means and what it looks like when put into action.

In today’s podcast, I’ll be having this conversation with Francine Garland Stark, Executive Director of the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence (MCEDV), and Sherry Edwards, Deputy Director of Caring Unlimited.

Our conversation encompasses what safety for people experience domestic violence really means, what we are missing in terms of getting there, what we can do as members of the community to help create a safer environment, and why having conversations like this one are important.
